Bates SAR

On August 12, 2017 at approx. 10:30 PM, Officers from the Oregon County Sheriff's Office and the Alton Police Department, along with members of the Alton Volunteer Fire Department performed a technical rescue operation in the Mark Twain National Forest along the Eleven Point River.

26 year old Matt Bates of Alton was located on the north side of the river across from the Long Hollow river access. It was discovered that Bates had fallen from a rock cliff and sustained injuries to his head and shoulder. Rescuers ascended two rock bluffs to reach the victim and rendered first aid. The victim was secured into a rescue basket and lowered down the bluffs utilizing technical rescue equipment. Rescuers then forded the river with Bates to deliver him to awaiting Oregon County ambulance personnel.

Oregon County Sheriff Eric King extends his gratitude to the Officers and Dispatchers of the Oregon County Sheriff's Office, the Alton Police Department, and the Alton Volunteer Fire Department.
